Made this photograph while I was walking around Arcata during a trip to see my sister. It felt very nice to be in a place that wasn’t southern California. And as you can see, the weather was perfect. There are more photos from my trip, and maybe I’ll post more of them eventually, but this one felt like it needed to be in my Places portfolio.

A few weeks back, Danny was kind enough to meet up to make some photographs. The second photograph is the photo that I had in mind and had told Danny about. It really came together nicely, this idea I had about a musician/performer playing on a street where the viewer is left to wonder who the audience is, when in fact it’s just the musician performing for the sweet pleasure of performing.

For some reason, though, it’s the first photograph that I really like. The one on top really works for me. I just like it. When we met up at the table pictured in the photo, we spent some time talking and catching up. I really enjoyed the conversation; maybe that’s why the first photograph seems to really resonate with me even now.

Added another photograph to my places portfolio. This is the view from the fourth level of one of the parking garages at a hospital in Fontana, California.

I made this photograph while waiting at the hospital. On this particular morning I had driven my grandmother to the hospital along with my aunt for my grandmother’s doctor appointment. While my aunt took her inside I waited outside for them so that when they were ready I’d be able to bring the car to them to make it all much easier. I remember thinking about a lot of things that morning. I think all of my thoughts had to do with the passage of time and how that effects relationships we have with each other.

When I noticed the orange vehicles I pulled the viewfinder to my eye and composed and adjusted the camera settings to make this photograph, but I honestly can’t remember much of the technical. I’d like to think that it’s because I’m so used to setting exposure that I didn’t need to worry, but the truth is that my mind was going in different directions, mostly with a sense of worry and urgency, so I was forced to rely on experience.

When I got around to working on this photograph on my computer, I realized instantly that I really felt something from it. I think with all of my photographs I look for a sense of hope or something good. Maybe I’m reaching, but there’s a balance in the photograph that really does give me that sense that everything is going to be alright. I suppose I needed that then. Looking at it now, I think I could use that still.

places. a new photograph

Ok so I’m going to try something new. I’ve decided I want to have a small-ish portfolio of photographs of places and/or landscape type photography. To that end, I’ll occasionally post photographs as I enter them into the portfolio ‘places’ which should be in the menu to the left by now. And maybe I’ll include a description when I do.

So this photograph was originally supposed to be a part of my Colton series. It’s of a dry cleaning business that, as a kid, I thought had to be cool because it was a drive-thru of sorts and drive-thru’s were cool. Weren’t they? In any other drive thru you could get a happy meal and a toy. At least, that’s what I think I believed when I was much younger. Anyway, this is the photograph. Now that I look at it, maybe I should still include it.

food truck festival portrait

This past weekend I was making photographs at the Food Truck Festival in Ontario, California. This is easily my favorite photo. If I had to get rid of all the rest or lose them in a fire, I’d take this one with me. A simple portrait where there’s an obvious interaction between the subject and the photographer. That and it evokes that cheeful feeling everyone attending seemed to have going for them despite the hot sun; good food does that.

There’s more photos that I’ll keep and post in the coming days but for now, this one will do.

Fish and chips

This was a fun one. Simple to photograph, just a bit of light and it was done. Food wise, I cooked the potatoes in a little olive oil and they tasted great. The fish, however, was dunked in vegetable oil and tasted delicious. I do wish I’d made the batter a little thicker because it had a nice flavor. Next time. Always next time.

Poached Egg on Toast

Did a few of these the other day. I ended up cooking only one egg, the results of much practice, I’m sure. Simple and fun, the way I like my photography. One more photo inside.

There are other variations, but until I put more up, I’m really enjoying these two.

Portraits of Tommy Peacock

Here’s a few music portraits that, to the best of my knowledge and attempts at searching through previous posts, I haven’t posted before. A couple of months back, I was commissioned by and worked with Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Tommy Peacock on some promotional photos he wanted done for his own use. We decided that it would be best to have him dressed as if for a performance, with his guitar. I have to say that this case, it was definitely the best decision.

See, he’s an all around nice guy and it was a pleasure talking to him and an even bigger pleasure to collaborate on creating photos with him.

It’s when he performs though that his rich personality comes through. Photographing him in this way really shows that excitement and energy that he brings with him in his shows. He has a lot of fun doing what he does. That made it a lot of fun for me to make these pictures.

Added a new photo portfolio

One thing I really enjoy doing is taking photographs of musicians and artists doing what they do. It’s nice to be able to take photographs at a live event and it’s even better to be assigned to do so. In the shows I’ve covered, I’ve been lucky to have been exposed to some really exciting artists.

Something new

A few days ago, I was fortunate enough to photograph a friend of mine. I had to create some new photos, and when I say ‘had to,’ it’s in the sense that as a photographer there often comes that moment where you have an idea or desire to create something and so you find a way to make it happen. I was lucky because Ramy had some time and was kind enough to sit for me. Well, and stand.

The standing photo is the one I had in my head. The subsequent photos are what I would say falls in that category that Avedon talks about when he says that it’s a gift given to a photographer. I’d already gotten the photograph that I wanted and probably wouldn’t have thought of these, but my friend did.

I try not to say whether or not I really enjoy my own photographs or even to what degree, but I’m really very pleased with how these turned out.

A Recent Portrait

I’d had this idea in my head, I wanted to do another portrait of Vanessa, it would need to be a shot vertically. It would be bright or as near to bright as I could get it without looking like a pure white background.

We’d been at the Norton Simon museum and Vanessa had found this print of Picasso’s Guernica. When we hung it on the wall, I thought it looked perfect. Well, perfect for what I had in mind. The picture was coming together.

I wanted it to look natural, but I wanted it to convey some of her personality. Looking at it now, I think it does that perfectly. Just one from the seemingly never ending list of ideas I have for photos I’d like to make. Enjoy.

Deborah Crooks, Berkeley, California

A couple weeks ago, while in the bay area, I got the opportunity to connect with and photograph singer and songwriter Deborah Crooks.

We worked our way through North Berkeley, trying different areas. It didn’t hurt that good weather and a holiday was on our side. It’s easy though, to make photos, when your subject has a great personality and mood. Here’s some of the photos that we created. Enjoy.
